The Self-Care Ritual Guide: How to Achieve Period Rest and Recovery with Nervous System Reset Practices

period-rest-and-recovery

When life speeds up, your body craves one thing most: safety. The part of your body responsible for that sense of calm and balance is your parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and digest" state that helps you exhale, release tension, and restore your energy.

Your period is one of the most natural times to reconnect with this system. When you slow down, breathe deeply, and allow your body to flow freely, you activate the healing potential that’s already within you.

🌬 Step 1: Breathe With Intention

Your vagus nerve is the superhighway between your brain, heart, and gut. One of the simplest ways to calm it is through your breath.

Try this simple pranayama practice:

Sit comfortably (in lotus, or legs crossed if possible) with your spine tall.

  1. Place your right hand in front of your face and gently rest your middle and pointer fingers on your forehead,  Hold your right nostril closed with your thumb.
  2. Inhale through the left nostril for 4 counts.
  3. Hold gently for 4 counts. Close the left nostril with your ring finger,
  4. Exhale slowly through your right nostril for 6 to 8 counts. Hold for 4 counts.
  5. Reverse the direction this time breathing into the right nostril for 4 counts, holding, then breathing out of the left nostril for 6-8 counts.
  6. Repeat this cycle 10 times, focusing on the sound and rhythm of your breath.

Each slow exhale signals your body that you are safe, shifting your system into calm mode.

🌸 Step 2: Reconnect to Ritual

Your bleed isn’t just a cycle to get through; it’s a rhythm to honour. Try these simple rituals next time your period begins:

  • Warmth: Place a heat pack or your hands over your lower belly and take slow, deep breaths.
  • Grounding: Sip herbal tea like raspberry leaf or chamomile and journal what you’re ready to release.
  • Stillness: Rest without guilt. Even ten minutes of lying down and breathing can reset your energy.

When you give your body permission to slow down, your hormones and nervous system naturally follow.
