NDIS

National Disability Insurance Scheme

If you are an Australian Citizen or resident or permanent visa holder with a disability, the good news is you may be eligible for financial assistance through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The NDIS can help to ease the monetary pressure of buying products to assist with disabilities.

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new way of providing support for Australians with disability, their families and carers.

The NDIS will provide about 460,000 Australians under the age of 65 with a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life.

As an insurance scheme, the NDIS takes a lifetime approach, investing in people with disability early to improve their outcomes later in life.

Who is eligible?

You are eligible for the NDIS, if you are:

  • are under 65 when you make your application.
  • are an Australian Citizen or resident or permanent visa holder.
  • and meet the disability or early intervention requirements.

You can find more information about the NDIS requirements here.

If you aged 65 years and over you will not be eligible for the NDIS. In most cases, you will receive support through the Commonwealth aged care system. For further information, refer to the NDIS for people aged 65 years and over.

Who will decide if I can access the NDIS?

The NDIA determines individual eligibility for the NDIS. The NDIA is the national agency responsible for running the NDIS.

Some people, including people living in supported accommodation, accessing a community access service such as a day program, accessing a specialist disability case management service or accessing a respite service will go through a simplified eligibility process, based on the support they currently receive.

What help can I get from the NDIS?

The NDIS offers a range of assistance such as:

Information and referral, support to access community services and activities, individualised plans and supports, early intervention, funded supports, assistive technology and Auslan.

Eco Period and the NDIS:
